Report Writing

Report Writing : A newspaper report is an authentic of an incident or event. It is very precise and specific in detail and objective in style. It usually answers questions like what happened, where, when, how and what has been its impact or consequences. In the case of an event it also includes information about participants, guests, details of items or programme and occasion.

Tips on Effective Report Writing :

  • A report should written in a practical and business like manner presenting the necessary information as clearly as possible.
  • Since a report needs to be concise, elaborate details and explanations are left out and only the most relevant information is included.
  • An effective report is easy to follow and very well structured, beginning with a heading and running into several small paragraphs each dealing with only one aspect of the subject. The heading should be clear and factual.
  • Layout of a Newspaper Report :

    Head line or Title :  Catchy and brief

    By Line : A Sub Headline/Name, rank, position etc. of the person writing the report. (It can also come at the end)

    Opening Paragraph : A brief mention of what happened, where and how and most prominent consequence/effect along with the day, date and time when it took place.

    Details : Paragraph 2 and 3 give details of the event being reported. Eye witness accounts (along with some quotes) are also included. In case of accidents, loss of life and property is listed, cause of the accidents is concluded, police action and rescue operations, damage control exercise are detailed. Compensation and help announced by government are mentioned.

    Conclusion : A remark as to how the event has impacted life and people is made.

    Example :  Suppose you are Shelley Chopra, the Staff Reporter of the Times of India, Chandigarh. You have been asked to cover an event called "Walk for Young Heart". You have taken down the following notes:

    Occasion                :  World Heart Day

    Date                       :  24th September

    Place                      :  Amritsar

    Participants           :  Students from 15 schools & colleges & doctors

    Purpose                 :  Importance of keeping one’s heart young

    Taking information from these notes, write a report for you newspaper in not more than150 wards.

                                                             Mandira Leads Walk on World Heart Day

    Amritsar, September 24. A 'Walk for Young Heart' was organised here yesterday by the Escorts Heart and Super Speciality Institute to mark World Heart Day which is being observed in over 100 countries.

    Led by actress Mandira Bedi, along with Mayor Sunil Datti and Chairman, Improvement Trust Jugal Kishore, students of 15 schools and colleges and doctors participated in the walk. The doctors took the initiative to help people understand the importance of keeping one's heart young.

    The students in white caps held banners, speaking out slogans. "How young is your heart?" "Stop smoking, keep your heart beating", "Healthy heart, healthy start", "Prevent obesity, live longer" as they walked with the city's top heart and other specialists. Decrying smoking, the walk spread the message that quitting smoking could reduce the risk of heart disease by 25 to 30 percent.

    A free heart check up was also organised on the occasion and 250 persons availed the service. An inter-school quiz competition was organised to highlight the role of healthy diet and exercise. Holy Heart Presidency and DAV Public School were adjudged the winners and runners-up, respectively.
